Thanks Graeme, found this very interesting and it brought back some happy memories of Iceland. We found it a remarkable country and fondly remember the impressive Godafoss Waterfall and being very dehydrated in the thermal waters of the Blue Lagoon.
I also recall rows and rows of mackerel being smoked ready for distribution to local restaurants and the origin of their surnames - i.e David’s son was called Davidson, Peter’s son was called Peterson etc.
The geology of the island was fascinating and could have spent hours looking at the glaciers, volcanoes and geysers.
Am pleased you had a great time and agree we have a lot to learn from a community with family values at the heart of their lives.
Yes - the son and dottir naming conventions speak to the family values. The logical extension of this I learned was that married women don't take their husband's name.

What’s the social economic foundation or history so that gender, divorce, and status as a single parent were not factors there?
A society that is closer to a true meritocracy, compared with the illusion of one that is created elsewhere.
Also, a history of folks from these backgrounds being allowed to have the opportunity to lead and show that these biases are unfounded.
Can I say it’s like Ancient Greek governance model?
